So your trying to pop the inner joint out of the transmission?If so they have a shackle type adapter for slide hammers that clamp onto the joint and you screw the slide hammer onto and use that to pop it out.They also have a fork type that goes between the transmission case and joint and hooks to the slide hammer.

Diagram shows what the manual recommends. If you are not able to do it, get 2 large screwdriver and pry at 180 degres from each other. That would give you the leverage required. Prying with one bar tends to slant the joint making it hard to come out.

Can I get a slide hammer at an auto parts store?

You can rent one at auto zone but would have to find one of the adapters i mentioned to attach to it.

If you can't get a hold of the joint, the sledgehammer is not going to help. DO NOT force too hard. It can damage the clips get the joint stuck.

Try pushing the joint back in untill it becomes loose before you attempt to pry. Turn the joint to try other positions if necessary.

Thanks so much for your quick response! The trouble is, I can't get at it from 2 different angles. The frame is in the way. I have tried turning it also. I'm going to try the slide hammer. Thanks again!

With the adapters i mentioned you can get a hold of the shaft if you pry to hard againist the transmission case you can crack/break the transmissiin case.Which i think is worse case senerio i have seen people do that.Also sometimes there just isnt enough room behind the axle or a safe good place to pry againist the axle.Also since your replacing the axle if the slide hammer has the vice grip adapter you could pop the inner joint apart and use a big pair of vise grips with that adapter and the slide hammer.I have done that before also in a pinch iam not saying your way is a bad way khlow2008 just sharing what i have seen and what has worked for me.Also you do have to watch the force you use so you dont break anything.
