Can't accelerate

I have a 1996 Mazda Millenia with a 2.5 liter automatic.

It seems to be lacking power as the temperature of the car rises. It does fine on the freeway, but acceleration at low speeds is almost impossible. You have to tap the gas in a low gear and shift up from 1 to 2 to 3 and then to Drive, and eventually OverDrive. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the transmission.

other facts about the car:

the heater doesn't really come on even at high temps (bad thermostat or radiator might cause the transmission fluid to get to hot)

Transmission could be slipping-check the fluid level and condition-

Lagging acceleration could be caused by one of the following below

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing.
