When shifting from park into drive or reverse there is a hesitation and a shutter (all though very slight) is
felt and when moving forward it slips going into 3rd gear (if I let up on the gas it engages right away) and
it sometimes hesitates going into overdrive or when the converter locks up I'm not sure which.

if it shudders it can be a torque converter going bad or a clutchpak/seal problem. especially sinceyou 've said that is hesitates going into 3rdgear until you let off the gas, meaning that the pressure in the trans is going past the seal in that particular clutch pak, probably the drive clutch. when you let off the gas the seal will let it engage. your seals are more than likely hardened and won't seal properly or a bushing has spun on a shaft.

I have been asked by management to look into this problem for you, there are a few obvious things that need to be looked at so if you can advise if these have been done that would be great.... Firstly what condition is the oil in? dirty and smelly, if this is the case this is a sign of slipping clutches and over heating, is there any signs of excessive material in the pan? anything apart from the usual clutch material ? look for any signs of metal shades or rubber that may be a damaged seal or "O" ring, the next thing to do is get the transmission line pressures checked, this should be done by a qualified trans tech as they will see and recognise any odd readings, I will have a look at Mitchell 1 data base and see if that can shed any extra light on this problem, if you can advise on what I have covered here first that will be a big help.
