My 96 cherokee sport front differential makes a thumping sound what could it be?

How do we know it's the differential? Are you hearing it, with it on 4 jack-stands, with it turning? Or do you just hear a noise, up front somewhere, while traveling down the road? Have you/ do you know how to check "U" Joints (I can send a pic)? Do this Noise in 2WD or 4WD? We like Detail!---The Medic
