3.8L Engine
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires. Remove the ignition wire routing clips from the valve cover retaining bolt studs.
If the left side valve cover is being removed, proceed as follows:
Remove the oil filler cap.
For SC engines, remove the charge air cooler/intercooler tubes.
Remove the crankcase ventilation tube.
For SC engines, disconnect the engine oil cooler inlet tube and hose.
If the right side valve cover is being removed, proceed as follows:
Remove the PCV valve.
For SC engines, remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
For SC engines, remove the throttle body. For Details, please refer to Section 5 of this manual.
Unfasten the valve cover retaining screws/bolts, then remove the cover from the vehicle. Remove and discard the old gasket. Use a suitable solvent to carefully clean the old gasket material and/or dirt from the sealing surfaces.


Position a new gasket into the groove on the valve cover.
Place the cover on the cylinder head and install the retaining bolts. Note the location of the spark plug wire routing clip stud bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts to 7–9 ft. lbs. (9–12 Nm).
If the left side valve cover is being installed, proceed as follows:
For SC engines, connect the engine oil cooler inlet tube and hose.
Connect the crankcase ventilation tube.
For SC engines, install the charge air cooler/intercooler tubes.
Install the oil filler cap.
If the right side valve cover is being installed, proceed as follows:
For SC engines, install the throttle body. For Details, please refer to Section 5 of this manual.
For SC engines, connect the air cleaner outlet tube.
Install the PCV valve.
Install the spark plug wire routing clips, then connect the spark plug wires, as tagged during removal.
Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.
