what could cause my gas gauge to go to empty with gas in the car and shut the car off? 1996 Ford Taurus

i put gas in the car the gas gauge goes up,then goes to E. And shuts the car down as if out of gas.

Check the fuel sending unit and fuel pressure

check the fuel pressure.the fuel sending unit maybe faulty.thats why the gauge is off.you will need to have it tested.
