remove the engine fan from the water pump

I need to remove the clutch fan from the water pump, a large nut from a spindle on the water pump. I need some way to hold the water pump from spinning in order to loosen it.and do I turn clockwise or counterclockwise which way

counter clockwise. take an open end wrench and place it at the 12 o clock position. hit straight down with a hammer tilting toward counterclockwise. always works for me.
