Why does the shifter selector cable keep slipping off the transmission.

I bought a brand new shifter cable assembly ( included both cables) for a manual transmission. I installed them in the same fashion that the old one was one the car. I changed the cables because the rubber end in the gear selector cable was missing and a salvage piece was not working. After installing the cable the end is still slipping off the post on the transmission. What is wrong with it now? Do I need dynamite?

The service manual makes reference to replacing the retainer clips on the shifter levers on the transaxle but they don't really show a good picture of them. Are your clips missing, as in rusted off?
