Some people say to clear DTC's from OBD2

Take off the positive cable, not the negative. Is that true, and how can it possibly make a difference? thank you.

Well, okay. Stated my question above. Where did that idea come from? to remove the pos. cable for OBD2, and the neg. for OBD1. Sounds screwy, but I'll accept your answer. thank you.

By disconnecting the battery, it will erase soft codes. However, the proper way is to use a scanner. As far as the - and +, never heard of that. I was always told to remove the neg first to help lower the risk of shorting the battery.

Disconnecting the battery is like killing the brain which is the ROM section of the computer

You need a scantool to erase the code/s

We are happy to help, and we wish you a great Christmas too. As far as the scan tool, go for it. Many of the parts stores sell them starting under 50.00. They are designed to read engine codes, but won't read trans, HVAC... codes. Regardless, they are nice to have, especially with today's cars.
