1996 Chevrolet Suburban Rear hatch won't open

Hey my rear hatch won't open. The only way to open it is to have 1 person hit the unlock button for it and have 1 person pull the hatch at the same time. But I broke the handle on it too because I thought it was unlocked one time and I pulled too hard so now it's even more F'd up. Please help!!

Sounds like the latch needs to be adjusted to pull the door tighter so it will have tension on it when the lock is released.
