One important mistake a lot of people make is thinking they're going to fix a mechanical problem by disconnecting the battery. Fault codes set for a reason, and the goal is not to quickly erase them, cover up the problem, and hope it doesn't come back. It's to keep the problem acting up so it can be diagnosed.

The first step is always to read and record diagnostic fault codes BEFORE removing power to the Engine Computer. If the problem is intermittent and doesn't act up very often, that valuable information will be lost. Also, a lot of fault codes that indicate a circuit needs further diagnosis will stop any self-tests that rely on that circuit to compare things to. Erasing fault codes by removing power also erases fuel trim data, then the computer has to start rebuilding that in its memory. Fuel trim data can also be real useful when trying to determine which way to go with the diagnosis. That's why I want to know what the problem is before I tell someone how to lose all that information.

My husband replaced my alternator about a month ago and this month my car needs inspection. When he went to get it inspected, they told him that it had not been driven enough since the alternator was changed. It needed to be drove for 75 miles for the computer to reset. I have driven the car about 200 miles, why would the computer not be reset and is there anything we can do to make it reset?

thank you

Computer relearns by driving it. That is the only way to relearn PCU. Perhaps you should disconnect battery then reconnect and try the relearn procedure again.

If I try it again and it still doesn't reset, what could be wrong. I only have 14 more days to get my car inspected. How many miles does it normally take to reset the computer?
thank you so much for the info you have given me.

If it doesn't work after 100 miles then you may need to contact local Chevy dealer to see if there are any other special procedures but this is all I found in all of my sources :)

you may have damaged the motor from overheating.

replacing anything now is not the thing to do.

no re setting computer. does nothing.

get a shop to check it for you
