Why would gear selector be hard to move from one gear to another?

The selector has become very difficult to move from park into any of the other gears. Seems to have gotten worse on colder days. I did try to lubricate the cable and it seemed to help a bit. Now it is back to moving hard again. Transmisson itself shifts fine when driving,just hard to move selector.
