I have a BMW 525I 1996 and it keeps over heating. What should I check first and what could be wrong?

My reaction is to ask a question or two first. How long has this been going on? Where is the car when the overheating is occurring, during start up, after you drive it for two or three minutes, only under load? What is the history? Has the cooling system ever been serviced? Has the thermostat ever been replaced? There are many possibilities and we can figure the issue out, I just need more information.
