leak in rear of car

I have a leak in the rear of my audi 1996 A4 It appears to be heavy oil/grease I think it could be the differential What is your oppinion on the causes and what is involved in the repair?

With out actually viewing the leak it is a bit hard to say, but if it is just a pinion seal, this will only be fairly cheap $30 for a seal maybe and around 3/4 Hr labour + any oil used.
