1996 Acural RL temperature gage pegged high

I have a 1996 Acura RL 3.5 that as soon as i start the car the Temp gage pegs high and stays there. Obviously this isnt temp related, and i just recently had my radiator cap replaced...could this have something to do with this? What else could cause the gage to peg high? Also, in the event i do not do anything about this if it is a costly repair, will a engine light come on in the event the temp of the care really does go high? Does this gage affect the operation of the car? Thanks.

Locate the sending unit and unplug it. If the gauge still reads high, that wire is grounded somewhere. There is a second coolant temperature sending unit for the Engine Computer. The one for the gauge won't affect the Engine Computer.
