to get out of park on my 1995 Volvo I must press the shift override button, what does this mean?

You need to have the shift interlock control system checked out-

does this involve the transmission? Is it really expensive? Can I continue to drive the car?

Check if your brake lights are working properly-no it doesn't involve the transmission -
