apart from 3 bolts, what other connection must be disconnected from the air filter housing so it can be removed to make room for access to change the spark plugs?

We don't have this model Polo in North America.... what engine code is it? ADX, AEA, AEV... other?

You should be able to figure this out yourself as you have the engine in front of you. If a part is preventing you from gaining access to the
plugs... remove that part.
