i have had this car since 95 brand new. never a problem always took it to saturn for service , now that it is getting up in miles i want to do things myself . just got brand new battery , all connections are tight even on the starter. when key is turned the car sounds like it wants to turn over .there is no clicking sound . after a couple of trys i smell gas. i want to think it may be the starter , but i am not sure. it sounds like it skips or hesitates as it trys to turn over
please help.

So is the starter turning over the engine normal speed when trying to start the engine?Or is the starter not turning over the engine to try to start it.Also have you made sure the cable ends are clean and tight?Do you have a multimeter to do some testing?

A multimeter would be really handy to figure out whats going on.SO the starter will not make the engine rotate around?

Yes always reply to this post for this question. When you get the meter set it to dc volt's at least the 20 volt setting hook it to the battery cable's.Now try to start it and see what the battery voltage drop's too.Let me know the voltage is before you try to start it and when you try to start it.
