Was driving vehicle on interstate and it started sputtering real bad loosing power then just died. Finally got started. Started out badly sputtering holding gas to floor finally got RPM's up got vehicle off the interstate barely keep wanting to die and eventually did. Got vehicle towed home removed O2 sensor and thought this fixed problem but 4 miles into test drive died again. Checked fuel line by engine getting plenty to that point. Also backfiring a lot.

the backfiring indicates a lack of fuel or ignition at the wrong time. when did you last replace the timing belt?

Timing belts are usually done every 60000 to 75000 miles. You're lucky it didn't break. The crank sensor is cheap and easy if you want to replace it but it almost never causes backfire. It just won't crank when those fail most of the time. Is service the timing belt and all the idler and tensioner pulleys associated with it as well as the water pump as it's driven by the belt also
