They are not the same. Bolt holes are in different locations. Splines are different. Shaft is a different length. Mounts are different. Axle shaft splines are different.

You can't install a Volvo transmission.
You can't install a BMW transmission.
You can't install a Lexus transmission.
What you can install is a '95 Protege transmission.

You have to ask the person who has a transmission to sell how much they want for it. Salvage yards will have different prices on used ones depending on how many miles are on it, how old it is, and how much demand there is for that model.

Labor rates vary at different shops. You'll have to ask how much they will charge to replace your transmission. Most shops charge more labor when you supply the used transmission, and if it has a problem, you will have to pay again to have a different transmission installed.

If you let the people at the shop order a used transmission and install it, they will charge a little more for the transmission but if it has a problem, you don't pay to have them install a second one.
