1995 lexus ES300 od light flashing, engine revvving at 3000 rpms 40 mph or higher. Car shifts to P, N, D or R with ease, slight noise..Pulled out of parking lot and heard grinding noise coming from under my shifter, then it went away.Never heard it again.
Do I need a new transmission?
Anything i can do to test to see if transmission is bad?

thanks!!!

Have the computer scanned to identify where the problem is coming from.

The dealership told me to replace the dash cluster as well. They said to replace dash cluster and ecu at the same time to fix it...Does this make sense to you?

Since the OD light is flashing, that would indicate a fault has been detected and you need a scan to retrieve the trouble codes and proceed from there. Without the trouble code, we are looking for a needle in the haystack.

The Only codes I can get from testing are P072 and P0500.

P0500 is a fault with the vehicle speed sensor but P072 is not found in our database.

I believe rectifying P0500 might solve your problem.

I found that the speed sensor number 2 could be the problem. It has 2 plugs on it. Do you know where I can locate it on the lexus es300 1994 model?

thanks!

Is the speedometer working correctly? If yes, it is not the fault of the VSS # 2. It could be a faulty meter cluster, wiring or ECM.

Problem is bot due to a fault with the VSS # 2.

Here are the diagnostic procedures for P0500 and P0720, both are the same, one is from the engine diagnostic while the other is from the transmission.

The rrepair recommendation to replace the meter cluster seems to be correct.

Thank you guys for answering some questions. I did get the dash cluster replaced now when I maintain a constant speed, my engine no longer revs and my rpms drop as they should.

You're welcome.

Glad to know you have fixed the problem. The speed sensor fault caused the engine rpm flares due to a fault with the meter cluster speed sensor.

Have a great day.

Hey,

I have an update. The check engine light went out on its own and the car worked like it did before. Then it came back on few days later and i am getting the same problem.

The guys at midas tested it and it pointed to an ecm problem.

Could it be soemthing else. what are the odds the ecm i got from the yard is bad???

I know the cluster and wiring should be ok.

could it be a bad fuel filter? Or a bad cat?

I sent off my ecm to be fixed. I will update when its done.

For ECM there is no telling if the unit from the junkyard is bad but the chances of them failing are rare.
