starter relay

Unplug the starter relay. If it will still crank, check to see if you have the little silver Nippendenso starter. If so, the solenoid plunger is getting stuck between the worn contacts. Holler back with your findings.

(Be careful to shield your eyes when you connect the battery cable. The sparks can ignite the hydrogen gas they give off).

Check the starter relay if its sticking

it does have more then 0 miles ne way i checked the starter relay is fine I checked it do you know of any other reason why it cranks over an over i have a new starter, ignition switch an battery cables, it looks squared away but its still acting the same way

There should be a label inside the fuse box cover that shows which one it is. Pull the starter relay, not a fuse.

Yup. They're about 1 1/8" cubed. I don't have a photo, but I do have a line drawing that shows the orientation of the pins. If you have three relays, go ahead and pull all of them. One has to be for the starter.

See if this helps. This is the under-hood fuse box for a '93 Grand Cherokee but it might be the same.

i realized when I put the key in it does not click it just turns all the way with no resistance i forgot to mention that it could be stuck some where i need help with ignition the key does not not click when I turn it like stuck all the way back in the off position or in stuck forward in the on position is it possible that could be the hole reason it starts up with out a key

also what if I just spend the money to get the hole steering column replaced would that just fix what ever is stuck I cant seem to get too?

Don't be thinking about the whole steering column. That's like replacing the engine because it needs a tune-up. What might have happened is the cam on the end of the lock cylinder has cracked. That is somewhat common but it normally causes a no-crank condition because it won't turn the switch far enough. It's possible that broken cam is jammed and holding the switch, but an even more likely suspect is the switch itself. Sometimes the contacts overheat. It's possible a part of the plastic housing melted and is holding the contacts together.

Remove the covers behind the steering wheel, then unplug the connector from the ignition switch to see if the starter stops cranking.
