which no.# piston do i need to have on top to set my crankshaft to replace my timing belt?

set all the marking on belt. pulleys and crankshaft,still wont crank.i was using no.#1 piston to be up top-wont start-which piston is it?

-No.1 piston should be on its compression stroke not on exhaust-double check if its correct-look for fuel and spark
