1995 geo tracker must keep foot on gas to keep running

My daughter has complained about this car for a while sometimes it wont start but after it sits for a while starts fine now sometimes when you start it if runs for a few seconds hen dies unless you keep your foot on the gas. you must shift into Drive while keeping your foot on gas pedal and drive. after it sits again it will run fine. Please advise with possibilities.
