steering wheel is locked

key goes into ignition but wont turn and steering wheel is locked into position

I got it unlocked by tapping on key with hammer and just kept mucking around twisting the wheel and jiggling the key for heaps long. I'm just gonna leave the key in it all the time to try to stop it happening again.
