hammer banging noise in top end

car was running ok sat for an hour and on start-up it sounds like a little monkey is beating a hammer in the top end checked oil it was very low added 2.5 qts and she drove it home 5 mi is this a valve prob or maybe a cam sohc 1.9 engine

ya it sounds like it's a cam/follower going bad, probably due to the lack of oil as you had to add 2.5 qts. this would only hold 5 qts at the very most.
