engine runs rough

ist starting up or in passing gear, sounds like the motor is going to blow. It's always sounded like this. Anything I can do to quiet the enginedown and not run so rough?

Check for vacuum leaks. Check and clean the EGR and IAC, if so equipped. Run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through the tank. Check and clean, or replace the plugs, cap, and rotor. Measure resistance on the plug wires. Check compression.

Thanks for the help. I was also told the engine,(5.7), was a faulty engine that year and a couple more years. ex, piston size too small, piston slap. Any validity to that one...Thanks again
