1995 chevy k1500 with 350 and five speed manual trans. 4x4. Overheating when in 4wheel drive at higher speeds. Pull over and idle and it cools down. Not consuming coolant. Can't tell if fan is working. Where would you start?

Those are the two areas that I thought about. How do I determine if the fan is operating correctly? When at idle it is turning at a constant slow speed. Rev. it up and it does not appear that it increases in speed. Never hear it kick in even when it gets like 250 degrees. I have only approached that temp a couple of times and then I immediately pulled over and it cools down rapidly at idle.

Thank You very much for the help. Went out today and purchased heavy duty fan clutch and thermostat. Put the fan clutch on first and test drove and that solved the problem. Went ahead and put in the new thermostat anyway as that is a pretty easy job. Working fine. Good Job.
