The transmission will not shift into overdrive. I have been told solenoids or the clutch, any ideas?

When I first start driving my car it will shift good for a few minutes, after that it will not shift into overdrive. I can get the speed up but hit about 3500 to 4000 rpm's to get to 55. Is fine in areas where the speed limit is 30 or less. This happened with no notice, was driving one night and it was fine and then this problem.

Usually a sensor or solenoid will set a check engine light. Has that happened? Is the trans fluid clean and full?

The torque converter clutch (TCC) could be the problem, but without scanning the computer for trouble codes, it becomes a guessing game.

yes the check engine light is on, and yes the trans fluid is full and clean... Haven't smelt any burn smell from the tranny, don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Yes, the smell makes a difference. It's a good thing you haven't noticed any burnt smell. As far as the trans problem, you need to have the computer scanned. If the check engine light is on, there are trouble codes. My guess is the TCC, but that is a guess without the codes. Have the computer scanned and ask the tech to write down the codes that are retrieved so I can further check into the problem for you.
