it cold be , it may be due to wear, if you can taek the shifter out and look in trans put in neutral and see if the lugs all line up they may not be it shold look like an empty square/rectangle there shold only be 3-4 bolts holding shifter in trans and no flid shold come otunless you areon ahill. take a big screwdriver and line them up then reinstall shifter and see if it shifts ok then.
