morning,

the tail and brake lights on my 1994 plymouth acclaim will not turn off. how can I fix myself?

It's not both. They are 2 independent circuits. The brake lights are brighter than the tail lights. I suspect it's going to be the brake lights. This is usually caused by the brake light switch at the brake pedal. Sometimes the rubber pad the switch lands against falls off.

ok got it but, honestly the tail lights stay on as well. I do understand it can be two separate problems

How can you tell the tail lights are on if the brake lights are already on?

one is red the other yellow

.No, they are not. They are both red. If you have a yellow light on, it has to be a turn signal

Use a wiring diagram and a test light to track down the cause.
