Car registration

I purchased a car yesterday, the owner gave me the title with her name printed on the back where it says SIGNED. I went to DMV (New York State), and the clerk told me she cannot accept the title because its signed where it says printed...If the owner writes a note with her signature explaing this mistake will the DMV accept the title then??
