Usually, the part is replaced rather than repaired. Is the spring broken?

The problem was the fact that the handle was held in with a rivet type fastener. I decided to knock out the fastener replaced the spring. Then I replaced the fastener with a a sort of tension spring. it worked perfectly.

That sounds like a good idea. The rivit thing is somewhat new. Screws were used in the past. The rivits must be cheaper and easier to do.
