I have a 1994 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport
4.0, Auto, 231j transfer case

I purchased a used 231j out of a 1996.
The rear driveshaft (tailshaft) is different.
1994 has a yoke that slides in/out of transfer case.
1996 has a fixed yoke (inside rubber boot on driveshaft)

If I buy a 96 driveshaft that fits the new transfer case will it be the right length and configuration to go on my 1994?

You would have to have a new driveshaft built to make it work.
