I changed a seal on the tail housing of the transfer case. I put it back together, and when I drive it, it has an occasional grinding noise. If I take the drive shaft out, and drive it in four wheel drive, it doesn't make the sound.

Check the transmission/transaxle fluid.

Try to shake the snout of the drive shaft where it goes into the tailshaft of the transmission (sometimes a worn bushing there will cause the shaft to wobble, causing noise and wearingout the seal.

Also, check the U-joinits for looseness.
