I have a 1993 5-speed 2.0 liter Turbo Toyota MR2 in excellent condition. Oil and filter changed every 3000 miles and all dealer recommended services have been performed on it as they suggested. It has 102,311 miles on it. Lately, I noticed the tachometer is registering awfully low RPM read-outs. It idles at 200-300 RPM which seems very low, but the car still runs and sounds as if it's running normally. Also, even though I go thru all the gears on acceleration and decelerating, it will very rarely (if at all) reach higher than 2200 RPM's. Is there a problem with my automobile that I should be concerned with, or does it sound like the tachometer is going bad ? I don't want to continue to drive it if I could possibly do any damage to it by driving it.

Does the engine continue to increase in RPM's even though the tach stops at 2200? As far as the idle, check for vacuum leaks and check the idle air control valve.
