You don't need a code reader. Chrysler has always made reading engine codes yourself much easier than any other manufacturer. On '95 and older models you have to count the flashes of the Check Engine light. Cycle the ignition switch from "off" to "run" three times within five seconds without cranking the engine, leave it in "run", then count the number of flashes for the first digit. After a short pause, count again for the second digit. Additional codes will flash after a longer pause. The last code will be "55" which can be ignored.

To use a scanner or code reader, the plug is by the left strut tower. It's a 1" square plug with a corner cut out, and has six terminals.

If you're losing spark and injector pulses, the Hall Effect pickup in the distributor is a real common cause. All auto parts stores will have them.
