Hi, I'm replacing the head gasket of a 1993 Nissan Maxima and the mechanic book says that I have to replace the head bolts. I was wondering if it's really necessary or not. Thank you for the eventually answer.

Yes. Many engines use "torque-to-yield" bolts that are a one-time-use bolt. They physically stretch when installed to help hold the cylinder head clamped tightly in place. Used head bolts will not hold sufficient tension on the head.
