Fuel pump replacement problem

I am changing the fuel pump on a 1993 ford explorer. 4.0L with 4wd. The old pump was pretty rusty and the posts were cracked and broke off during removal. They were/are protruding from the fuel line connector just slightly(about an inch.) The connector has a spring fitting. We got a disconnect tool and removed one of the posts, but on the other one, the tool doesn't seem to be engaging the spring. Even if the spring were engaged, we can't really reach the post to pull it out through the tool, since it broke off so short. Is there anything else we can try?

Can you upload a picture of what you are refering to. I'm not sure I understand. What has broken too short the wiring harness or a fuel line?

Sorry, can't upload a pic, but the posts that come off the top of the fuel pump are broken off into the fuel line connector. I got one out using a disconnect tool, but can't get the other one. Problem is, I don't know if the disconnect tool is even expanding the spring inside to realease the post and even if it were, there is not enough length on the post to grab and pull out.
