My truck will backfire spurattically at lower speeds then when I get to around 55 and up and try to hold the gas steady to maintain my speed it will violently jerk and backfire but if I get into it it clears out

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked for trouble codes?

That can cause an idle issue, but shouldn't cause a backfire. DO you know how to check for codes? If not, try this.

Cycle the key on and off 3 times (do not start the engine). The 3rd time, leave the key in the on position. After a few seconds, the check engine light will begin to flash codes. All codes are 2 digit numbers. The first will be 12 and the last will be 55. Between the two, count the flashes and wait for a slight pause and then the flashes again to get each 2 digit number.

Let me know what you find.

Trouble code 32 -- Short or open in the EGR solenoid circuit. Check for loose, broken, or shorted wire in the EGR valve wiring and connectors. Possible air fuel ratio imbalance not detected during diagnosis.

Check to see if there are any vacuum leaks and check fuel pressure regulator.
