On a lot of trucks the rear shock absorbers go two different ways. On one side it bolts to the front of the axle tube, then angles forward as it goes up to where it bolts to the frame. On the other side it bolts to the back of the axle housing, then angles toward the rear as it goes up to the frame.
GM typically used a metal bar through the top rubber bushing, and two bolts and nuts to attach that bar to the frame. The original nuts were lock nuts, but most replacement shock absorbers come with replacement bolts, nuts, and separate lock washers. It's not unheard of for those bolts to work loose. If that's all that happened, all you need is two new bolts and nuts, but sometimes it can be pretty hard to reach up there to install them.
