why does trans warning light come on at low speed driving only

why my 93 bmw 325i auto trans warning light comes on at low speeds (25 mph) & it goes into a mode where only 3rd & 4th gear will work. i drive it 20 miles to work everyday on freeway & it runs perfect with no warning light & i can drive hundreds of miles on freeway no problem. but a few miles at 25 mph light will come on & it shifts into 3rd & wont go into lower gears. i pull over & shut off car, turn key on,run shifter thru all gears twice, start it & light goes out and trans is fine but if i dont get on fwy it will do it again. please help...

You are going to have to take the vehicle somewhere and Have it scanned for trouble codes. Some malfunction at low speeds is setting a transmission trouble code and sending the car into a default (or limp home) mode. When you turn the key off you reset the module and the vehicle returns to normal operation until the problem occurs again. There are numerous concerns that could cause this problem and the trouble codes will be the first step to finding a solution.
