The van is a '92 Chevy G20 Tiara Conversion. She has her original tranny, pushing its life at 98,000 miles. The transmission definitely needs replacing soon, but in this issue I'm more focused on anything it could be besides the transmission.
While accellerating, the van started making a low-pitched whining sound some time ago, that would randomly kick on and off, and raise slightly in pitch as I accelerated. Now, the low whine has turned overnight into a powerfully high-pitched whine, still randomly going on and off but staying on most of the drive now, mixed with a sort of grinding sound periodically. By ear, it sounds as if the sound is coming from the back of the van, approximately 7 ft from behind the passenger seat, and to throw a guess at it I would say the sound is coming from that side. I could be wrong.
These are the things I've come up with that could be the problem, besides the transmission:
Wheels Bearings?
Differential?
Timing Belt?
Power Steering?
I know this is a vague problem, provided the info I'm giving you, but if you have any advice you could share with me about this issue, or quick check/repair tips I would be much appreciative.
Thanks,
NW
