Timing

My 1992 Silverado has a timing problem. I hooked up my timing gun and set it to the right setting but at different RPM's it'll ping for a second and then lose power after the pinging stops. My dad thinks its the "advanced timing" but cant find what controls the advanced timing.

Did you disconnect the EST wire when checking the ignition timing

no, i dont believe i did. am i supposed to disconnect the EST wire before checking the ignition timing?

You suppose to disconnect the EST wire-then you set the ignition timing-shut off plug the wire back-clear it-

well, that was the problem, i didnt disconnect the EST wire before i set the timing.
i did as you said and it ran better. i didnt know when you disconnect the EST wire the timing would be different, now i do.
