What's stopping the Axle shaft not to go completely back in the front left side of a 1992 silverolda 4x4 truck

I took out the output shaft in my fronted of my 4x4 to replace a leaking seal.
and it want go all the way back in. It lacks about an inch to an inch and a half.
What haven done wrong?

remove the axle and make sure the end of the axle is ok. no burrs or debris on the shaft.
