1992 Chevy Lumina cams

1992 Chevy Lumina Z34 3.4, mileage: 104,000. My repair manual it says to put the cam "flats" UP...my question, the cams and cam gears are round, what are they referring to when they say "flats"?

We think the cam "flats" they are referring to are the flat ramps that lead up to the cam lobes. When number one cylinder is in firing position the intake and exhaust cam lobes ramps are both up not down opening the valves.
