If the check valve goes bad, the braking effort would increase drastically with braking efficiency dropping badly. Engine would most likely idle erratically.

When vehicle is shut off, wait a few seconds and test the brake pedal. If the pedal is soft and starts to get hard with each subsequent depression of the pedal, the valve is good.
