What would cause a 92 Buick Roadmaster to die when you put it in gear and it idles fine?

If this only happens after driving on the highway, you might look at a sticking TCC solenoid in the transmission.
If it's happening even from cold starts then you may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

The car has not been on the highway or even driven, for that matter, in a few months. The car was originally shutting off after it ran idling for about 10 minutes or less, but it would start right back up. This past weekend we swapped out the transmission, put a new transmission gasket and transmission filter on, I put a new fuel filter and fuel pump on it. Now it runs and idles fine without shutting off. The problem now is, when we put it in drive or reverse, it kicks real hard and dies out. But, it will start right back up.
