Looking for help with my 91 Ford Tempo.
To make a long story short - I put the pedal to the metal and blew something...Temp gauge went all the way hot and smoke started to roll out from under the hood, from what smelled like oil burning.
Luckily I was only a mile away from home and able it in the garage before any major (I hope) damage was done.
At home, I opened the hood and noticed that I blew the freeze plug out. Bought a new one, and put it in and checked the oil (it was down a quart).
Took it for a spin and it ran fine. Got it home and let it idle for a minute to make sure everything else was fine, and it was.
I shifted into reverse then it died. Wouldn't start, so I pumped the gas and it started again and idled it again in park and it was in fine. Again I tried to shift into reverse and it died. Did this another couple of times with the same results. Left it overnight and came back to it. Now when I start it it idles really rough in park and then dies.

Transmission solenoid? Vacuum hoses? Maybe I did something to the EGR valve? What else could it be? I'm trying to figure out what would of made the temp gauge go all the way up, ideas?

what about the antifreeze level? is radiator full? 'blew a freeze plug' seems strange unless coolant was frozen from lack of enough antifreeze which leaked out when you drove it thus causing overheat.
