Check/change the starter relay (sounds like its sticking). It is located above the right front fender well (passenger side).

Before replacing the relay check it by: Turning the ignition switch to the ON position. Connect a jumper wire between terminal "B" and "M." The starter should operate and the engine should start. Check to see if the starter is still engaged. If so disconnect starter relay terminal with the RED/LT BLU wire to see if this disengaged the starter. If the starter now disengages suspect a faulty ignition switch. If it does not disengage replace the starter relay.

** I'm assuming that you didn't have this problem before the battery died and that this is the same starter as before**

DIFFERENT FELLER

I JUST SAW YOUR LAST RESPONSE

IF THE RELAY IS COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED FROM THE BATTERY - YOU MUST HAVE THE POSITIVE CABLE HOOKED DIRECTLY TO THE STARTER?????

????

IF I MISUNDERSTOOD

MAYBE YOU HAVE THE STARTER AND BATTERY CABLES SWAPPED ON THE BIG POSTS THE STARTER RELAY?

MAYBE YOU HAVE ANOTHER WIRE/ CABLE HOOKED UP ON THE "STARTER SIDE" OF THE RELAY-- THE STARTER CABLE SHOULD BE ALL BY ITSELF ON THE BIG POST OF THE STARTER RELAY

OTHER THAN THAT, LOOK OVER THE DIAGRAM I MADE YOU BELOW
